Effective Strategies for Addressing Endometriosis
WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?
Endometriosis is an all too common womens health concern that causes severe pelvic pain.
This condition involves endometrial tissue ( tissue within the uterus that sheds during menses each month) building up outside of the uterus or in other parts of the body. Despite being located in the wrong place the extra endometrial tissue still responds to hormones, sheds and bleeds with menses however with no easy way of leaving the body. It is most commonly found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, rectum, bladder and space around the uterus.
The process of shedding creates an inflammatory process that causes symptoms such as pelvic pain, irregular or heavy menstruation, lower back pain, diarrhea or constipation, infertility, and pain with sexual intercourse. Because the extra endometrial tissue still responds to hormone signals excess estrogen levels can worsen these symptoms.
RISK FACTORS FOR DEVELOPING ENDOMETRIOSIS
Entering menopause at a later age
Early Start to Menstruation
Elevated Estrogen
Family history
Irregular menstrual flow
Nulliparous- women who have never given birth
TREATMENT FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS
The treatment for endometriosis involves a multifaceted approach. The disease process has autoimmune like tendencies with abnormal T cell behavior. It also amazingly has the capacity to create its own blood supply, manipulate the immune system, and produce estrogen to continue to grow. All this being said its important to not only address symptoms of pain but to also address the underlying immune dysregulation, inflammatory process, and hormone dysregulation.
